2005

Around about this time exactly 30 years ago I was driving down the center of the tarmac at Darwin Airport after having a drink with the crew of the RAAF C130 who had flown us to Darwin on Christmas Day. They were hosting a small party at the end of the tarmac in their aircraft and a fine time was had by all.

The runway at Darwin Airport is not perfectly flat (or wasn’t then) having a hump at the middle so when at on end you can’t see the other. As we were driving back home following the directions given to us… “just follow the lights in the center of the runway”, a USAF Galaxy Starlifter which had just landed came barrelling over the hump just in front of us. We nearly shat ourselves.
